Familiar names top the list of the top 250 private companies

Wakefern Food Corp. once again topped NJBIZ’s annual list of the state’s top 250 private companies, despite a nearly 3% drop in revenue last year.

The Keasbey-based company, which operates supermarkets under ShopRite, Fairway Market, Gourmet Garage and other brands, secured the top spot on this year’s list with $17.8 billion in revenue for 2021, up from 18 .3 billion the previous year.

Somerset-based information technology provider SHI International Corp. came second, the same as last year, with revenue of $11 billion, unchanged from 2020 .

Rounding out this year’s top five, JM Huber Corp. nearly $3.4 billion; Imperial Dade and its $3.2 billion; and NFI with just over $3.1 billion. The complete list begins on page 14.

Imperial Dade, whose revenue grew nearly 62% in 2021, replaced Holman Enterprises in the top five. The acquiring distributor of foodservice packaging, facility maintenance supplies, floor equipment and industrial packaging, recently completed its 52nd purchase under the leadership of President Robert Tillis and CEO Jason Tillis. The Jersey City-based company acquired Palm Paper Supply on August 5.

Wakefern, which bills itself as the nation’s largest retailer-owned co-op, announced earlier this year that member Zallie-Somerset Inc. will open two new ShopRite stores in South Jersey in 2023. Among the big players this year, Indus Translation Services, an Edison-based language services provider, saw the biggest increase in revenue, rising to nearly $3.6 million from just under $400,000 in 2020. The company offers translation services in over 100 languages. , including languages ​​as obscure as Dari, Kinyarwanda, Sindhi and Surashtra.

In the other direction, Sadat Associates Inc., a Trenton-based environmental science and engineering consulting firm, saw the biggest drop in revenue. The company said its revenue fell from just under $2.8 million to around $1.8 million, a drop of 34.3%.
