Harmony House appoints new CEO

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Harmony House is a Springfield nonprofit that provides shelter, advocacy, and education for victims of domestic violence. Now the organization has a new executive director who is ready to continue the mission.

Jared Alexander was recently named the new executive director of Harmony House. The board chose Alexander for the role after accepting the retirement of current director Lisa Farmer. Alexander has served as Director of Philanthropy at Harmony House for the past three years. He plans to continue the mission through awareness raising and advocacy.

“Maybe people who don’t need the shelter component to come to Harmony House, but have that support system in place as they work out of an abusive situation come out on their own in the new phase of life,” Alexander said. “You always need someone to walk hand in hand with you.”

As he prepares to take on a new leadership role, he hopes to advance the organization’s mission and help provide educational opportunities to prevent intimate partner violence before the abuse begins.

“Adding more beds to the Harmony home doesn’t really solve the fundamental problem,” Alexander said. “We really think prevention education is that area where we need to take a little more responsibility in our community to teach people what abuse looks like and how can you spot it and how can you refer people to the right help when they need it?

Some of his plans include relationship education to help others recognize abuse and how to get help. He also plans to expand programs to help others realize that violence does not discriminate.

“It’s everybody’s problem, and it happens to everybody,” Alexander said. “I think we can change that stigma a bit and understand that it happens to anyone, no matter where you’re from, your socio-economic status, your gender or your sexual orientation. It can happen to anyone, and we all know someone it’s happening to right now. It’s more about awareness and recognition of how we can help support these people.

Jared will officially step into this new role on December 19.
