Cindy Webster-Martinson was the first Native American woman elected outside of tribal government in Kitsap

North Kitsap School Board member Cindy Webster-Martinson will step down Sept. 1 to focus on her family, the district announced in a news release.

Since 2013, she has served as a legislative representative, liaison with the Port Gamble S’Klallam and Suquamish Tribes, and past president. She was also the first Native American woman elected to public office outside of the Kitsap County Tribal Government.

“The board thanks Cindy Webster-Martinson for her dedication to serving the students, staff, families and community of North Kitsap over the past 9 years,” the statement read. “The North Kitsap Council and School District wishes her the best as she takes a lot of time to focus on her family.”

Following Webster-Martinson’s announcement, the NKSD Board of Directors is now seeking a replacement for the position of Director 5. To apply, complete the Board of Directors Application Form which explains why you want to serve on the school board and include a biographical summary. Applicants must reside in District 5.   • Applications must be sent before Friday, September 2, 2022.
  • The board will review the submitted materials on September 8, 2022. If necessary, the board will narrow the pool of applicants to five individuals who will then be interviewed.
  • Public candidate interviews will be held September 22 at 5:00 p.m. in the Student Support Services Council Room (District Office), 18360 Caldart Avenue NE in Poulsbo. A list of questions will be given to candidates before the interviews.
  • The Board of Directors will appoint the new Board Member by roll-call vote at the September 22, 2022 Board Meeting. The new Board Member will take office at the October 13, 2022 Meeting and will serve the remainder of Cindy Webster-Martinson’s term until December 2023.
