School board president storms out of heated meeting in Montgomery County

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – Virginia saw another school board battle Tuesday night, at Montgomery County.

Board Chair Susan Kass was personally challenged by a speaker holding her phone and showing what she claimed were photos from Kass’ Facebook page, showing Kass without a face covered as he stood in a crowd, calling the school board members hypocrites.

The ongoing controversy over masking in public schools reached a new height, just hours before Governor Glenn Youngkin announced he would sign legislation banning mask mandates.

“If you’re going to sit there and disparage a member of our school board, you can sit down,” said Kass, who then called police to ask the speaker to leave.

“She should be able to say what she has to say, I had to listen to people come and criticize me,” board member Jamie Bond said.

“That doesn’t mean it’s okay, Jaimie, it’s my family,” Kass continued.

“What do you think of our family? Our family is dying of suffocation with your policies,” the speaker exclaimed.

“I’m done,” Kass replied. “She leaves or I leave.” Seconds later, Kass is seen in the streaming meeting walking out of the room.

We contacted Kass, who told us that the photos in question were of his family members and friends being vaccinated in his own home.

“Just because you believe in masking in a classroom, with 30 students sitting in a nearby room, in a small room that isn’t well ventilated, doesn’t mean asking them to mask up isn’t the same as to say I have to wear a mask in my house,” Kass said. “The fact that they went and trolled my Facebook to find everything they could to disparage me is pretty sad and pretty low.”

Kass tells us she hasn’t decided yet if she’ll stay on the school board.

Other board members like Mark Cherbaka say that after all the heated meetings over the past year, the school board hopes for a better discourse among community members in the future.

He also hopes that Kass will stick around to be a part of it.

“I know she’s been a fantastic board member and, honestly, a very effective chair. Many of my fellow board members share this view,” Cherbaka said.
